What is a kerosene heater and how do you maintain it?
• What is the principle behind the operation of a kerosene heater?
A kerosene heater is simply a heater that runs on kerosene. The heater draws kerosene from its tank via a cotton wick and burns it using an electronic igniter or an external ignition source.
The burning wick heats up specific metal coils, which in turn heat the air in the room. The intensity of the burning is controlled by a manual knob that raises and lowers the cotton wick.
• What are the common problems with a kerosene heater and how can you fix them yourself?
1. The heater is not working (it won't light):
The wick of the greenhouse is one of its most important parts, so it should be cleaned and replaced regularly. If the wick is intact, check the kerosene level in the greenhouse tank by reading the electronic gauge or by removing the tank cap and visually inspecting the tank. If the fuel level is low, refill the tank.
Some stoves have a battery-operated igniter. If you press the igniter and no spark or flame is produced, the battery may need replacing. If the igniter still doesn't work after replacing the battery, replace the igniter itself.
2. The problem of kerosene smell and smoke:
Sometimes a kerosene heater emits a pungent odor when the wick starts burning, and other times it produces thick black smoke. To solve these problems, follow these steps:
A. Move the greenhouse to a location with no drafts. Do not close the doors and ensure oxygen circulation in the room, but simply relocate the greenhouse away from drafts.
b. If the wick flame is too high, lower the cotton wick using the handle. A high wick can produce thick black smoke, so adjust the wick until the black smoke disappears.
C. A strong odor may result from the metal head not being properly seated on the base. Ensure that the head containing the coils is correctly positioned on its base.
d. Ensure that the kerosene used in the greenhouse is of high quality. Low-quality kerosene may cause the wick to ignite poorly and produce an unpleasant odor.
3. The problem of the greenhouse wick not rising:
Make sure the knob for raising and lowering the greenhouse wick is working properly. The knob may need replacing. All you'll need is a wrench to loosen the knob and replace it with one of the same type.
If the problem isn't with the handle, make sure the cotton wick is properly secured above the base. The wick should be evenly and evenly positioned. Pull on the ends of the wick and move them from side to side to ensure the vertical and horizontal alignment is correct.
4. Some other problems and malfunctions:
A. The flame may take longer than necessary to light. Make sure the wick is clean. If the wick is too old, replace it.
B. Sometimes the wick of the stove doesn't lower, and therefore the stove doesn't go out. This could be due to the wick not being adjusted correctly, being too high. It could also be due to tar buildup on the wick tip. Lower the wick manually using a screwdriver, then extinguish the flame with a damp cloth. Replace the wick on the stove, but this time firmly.
