How do you protect your house and garden from frost?
One of the most common weather conditions that causes problems in the home and garden is frost. Our country is one of the regions that is exposed to this condition every winter, leading to damage to many crops, in addition to damage to water meters, water lines, and water pumps.
How does frost occur?
Frost is usually caused by the ground surface temperature dropping to zero degrees Celsius or below, where cold air remains on the ground surface because it is denser than hot air, while hot air rises upwards. This is due to several reasons, either a very cold air mass, a significant decrease in humidity, or rapid cooling of the ground surface at night due to the absence of clouds.
Protecting water meters, pipes, and water pumps:
The best way to protect the water meter and pipes is to apply pipe insulation material and wrap it with the appropriate adhesive, or you can use burlap and wrap it well around the water meter and pipes.
As for pumps, which are among the most vulnerable to frost damage, if the pump is housed inside a room or enclosure, this greatly helps in protecting it. However, if it is outside an enclosure and exposed to the elements, it is essential to insulate it with rock wool or burlap. Otherwise, it will break down and become inoperable, and the repair costs will be high.
Plant protection:
Frost negatively affects plants and harms them greatly. When there are warnings of frost at night, avoid watering the plants on that day, so that the water does not freeze inside the plants when absorbed, and then lead to damage to their tissues.
You can also mulch around the roots to retain soil temperature. Wrapping branches in burlap can also help keep the soil warm (especially for young, newly planted trees).
Car protection:
One of the most common problems cars face is the explosion of pipes and radiators due to the expansion of water pipes when freezing. Therefore, we always recommend using an antifreeze , which is a liquid substance similar to water but with a very low freezing point.
Be careful not to turn on the wipers immediately while driving, as this can damage the wipers and scratch the glass. You can defrost the glass by turning on the interior heater or putting lukewarm water on it.
