Your guide to installing a door correctly
Installing a door may seem like a simple process, but if you do it incorrectly, it can leave gaps around the door or even prevent the door from closing completely.
Follow these steps.
• First step: Measure the door opening
Make sure the door fits into its designated opening.
Measure the height of the opening, then measure the width of the opening at both the top and bottom. Record your measurements.
• Step two: Check the floor
The most important step in installing a door is ensuring that the two wooden beams fixed to the wall on either side of the door are at the correct height. If the floor isn't level, you'll need to trim the bottom of one of the beams slightly. Use a measuring tape to determine the height difference and calculate the length of the trim you'll need to cut.
• Step three: Buying the door
When purchasing a door, ensure it is 5 centimeters smaller than the door opening. After installation, the door will be approximately half a centimeter smaller, allowing for easier opening and closing. If you purchase a door larger than the opening, you will need to trim it during installation.
• Step four: Modify the door:
Ask yourself, will there be a rug under the door or directly on the floor? This question is important during the door modification process.
The first modification will be to the crossbar. You will need a saw to cut a section from the top side of the crossbar. The cut must be less than half a centimeter, otherwise you will have to level the bottom of the door to match the floor and the crossbar.
The second adjustment is smoothing the door. You will need to sand the door edges thoroughly until they are completely smooth. Note that the less smooth the door is, the better.
You can now check if the door fits properly by placing it in the frame. Use shallow pegs, and ideally, have a family member help you with this. If the door doesn't fit the opening, you'll need to readjust it until it fits perfectly.
• Step five: Positioning the hinges
Determining the hinge position is crucial as it dictates which way the door opens. The door should open into the room, and the hinges should be positioned on the side opposite the light switches. For example, if the light switches are on the right side, the hinges should be on the left. This allows easy access to the light switches when you open the door.
To position the hinges correctly, place the door in its designated opening within the frame and measure the distance from the top and bottom of the door. Mark these points 15 centimeters apart on both sides. These marks indicate where the hinges will be attached at the top and bottom of the door. Place the hinge on the door and trace around it with a pencil. Repeat this process for the second hinge.
Use a chisel to create the necessary recess for the hinges, then use sandpaper to smooth the recess. Do not create a recess too deep, or you will damage the door.
• Step six: Installing the door
Install the hinges using a screwdriver or drill. Mark the hinge locations on the frame. Have a family member with you to help you position the door inside the frame so you can mark the hinge locations on the frame with a pencil.
Now, create a recess in the door frame, just as you did in the door itself. Hold the door again and check if it fits correctly in the frame. After creating the hinge recesses in the frame, attach the hinges using a screwdriver and screws.
Finally, install the door inside the frame.
