Learn how to choose the right drill bits for you

If you want to do some DIY work in your home, you definitely need a hammer drill.

This tool is essential for drilling and tightening various types of materials, and to improve its performance, you need to choose the appropriate drill bit.

Drill Characteristics:

A screwdriver drill works mainly with a drill bit, and depending on the materials to be drilled or screwed – wood, metal, concrete, glass, brick, and tile – there are different types of appropriate drill bits. These can be made of steel alloy or carbide, hexagonal, smooth or grooved, or high-level, medium-range, or entry-level. In all cases, the drill bit must meet the drilling and/or tightening needs. A box of hammer drill bits or cordless screwdrivers is essential.

Is any drill bit suitable for any material?

  • Wood

For drilling wood, wood drill bits are more suitable than ordinary drill bits. These bits are particularly characterized by their three-pointed head, specifically designed for drilling soft materials. Woodworking bits have a smooth or hexagonal shank. They can be made of steel for carpentry and woodworking. Auger or twist bits are more suitable for drilling holes in wood. But there are also spiral bits that make it easier to remove wood chips.

  • Metal

For drilling metal, smooth or hexagonal type drill bits are preferred. These types of drill bits are particularly suitable for drilling hard materials such as iron, steel, nickel, bronze, stainless steel, or chrome. These are mostly tungsten carbide, titanium, cobalt, or solid carbide drill bits. Some drills are even exclusively designed for drilling ferrous and/or non-ferrous metals.

  • Concrete

Concrete is a hard material that is difficult to penetrate. To drill a hole in concrete, you need an SDS+ or SDS Max type concrete drill bit or smooth shanks. The concrete drill bit is characterized by its entirely hardened steel tip, wound with tungsten carbide grains. With a carbide tip with 2 to 4 cutting edges, it easily drills concrete, cellular concrete, and breeze blocks.

  • Glass

To perform drilling work on glass, you need a diamond drill bit. You will also find it as a diamond bit in the market.

  • Tile

Tiles, terracotta, and ceramics require the use of a tungsten carbide drill bit when drilling. This bit is usually conical in shape and equipped with a smooth shank.
