Ideas for upcycling wooden furniture
If you own old wooden furniture that's been discarded, why not refurbish it to give it new life! You might also want to repaint your furniture for decorative reasons. In any case, you'll need to consider sanding. At first glance, sanding wooden furniture seems simple. However, it's a delicate process that requires key techniques. In fact, poor sanding can damage the wooden piece. Here are some tips to help you properly sand your wooden furniture.
Prerequisites:
Before sanding, it is essential to ventilate the room you will be working in. It is also necessary to properly cover your furniture to avoid contact with dust. Don't forget to wear protective equipment such as gloves, overalls, safety glasses, etc. Also, keep a vacuum cleaner nearby to clean up wood debris and fine particles.
It will also be important to choose appropriate tools.
Everything depends on the nature of the wood to be sanded and the finishes to be stripped.
In any case, you will need protective covers, wedges, an electric sander, a sanding sponge, and a damp cloth. Also consider purchasing sandpaper with the appropriate grit size. The higher the number, the finer the grit size. Choose according to the type of wood to be sanded: solid wood, waxed wood, painted or varnished wood, veneer, etc. It will also be necessary to provide an extension cord of 5 to 10 meters so that you can work easily, without the slightest restriction.
Sanding:
For sanding, you can choose between using a sanding tool or doing it manually. If you have to work on a surface with a layer of varnish or paint, consider performing a rough stripping first.
Sander:
You can use an electric sander for a flat surface or a triangular model for an irregular surface. You just need to turn on your device and work on the entire surface. You just have to follow the direction of the wood to avoid damaging the aesthetic value of the furniture. Use a corner sander to reach uneven surfaces. For finishes, choose fine-grit sandpaper.
Manual sanding:
If you want to do it manually, you will need to use medium-grit sandpaper and a sanding block. Again, sand in the direction of the wood grain. Finally, sand with fine-grit sandpaper.
Finishing:
To finish, use a slightly damp cloth to remove any dust residue left by sanding. Then wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Once sanding is complete, you can apply a coat of paint or even varnish, depending on the desired finish.
