How do you remove rust from tools?

Rust is the primary enemy of all DIY tools. Whether for home use or larger jobs, it's always best to keep your tools well-maintained to prevent corrosion and damage from rust. In this article, we will show you some tips.

Newspaper Sheets:

Sometimes, newspaper sheets are enough to remove small rust spots from your equipment. To do this, take a few sheets of a newspaper you no longer read. Roll them into a ball and then soak them in white vinegar. Use it to clean your tools by vigorously rubbing the rusty parts.

White Vinegar:

White vinegar is very effective at removing rust that clogs metal tools, screws, or nuts. To do this, pour enough white vinegar into a basin and immerse your tools in it. Leave them overnight, then rinse your tools one by one with clear water before drying them outdoors.

WD-40 Multi-Purpose Product:

The WD-40 multi-purpose product can be used in two different ways:

  • Either spray your tools individually, allowing a 10-minute break for each, before gently brushing them to remove residue.
  • Or immerse your tools directly in a tray filled with WD-40 multi-purpose product to remove the toughest rust stains. Thanks to the product's applicator, you will be able to reach the most inaccessible corners of your tools. You will also get high precision using the dual-action spray that allows you to spray each tool with a single gesture.

Sometimes the toughest rust spots remain after this process. In this case, you will need to sand the metal with a wire brush on a screwdriver or file. Do not hesitate to apply a finishing coat of WD-40 multi-purpose product for best results and to prevent the risk of corrosion.

Coca-Cola:

Even better, you will be able to combine business with pleasure. In fact, rust spots also disappear under the effect of a few drops of Coca-Cola. The miracle happens when you pour a little of this drink on the rusty part of your tool. Spread the liquid well over the entire piece using the soft side of a kitchen sponge, then gently scrub with the rough side.

Onion:

An unrecognized grandmother's trick, but onion is also a miracle cure against rust. Cut it in half and sprinkle the surface with powdered sugar. Take your tools one by one and vigorously rub the rusty part with the onion.

HG Rust Remover:

The HG brand has a range of about 300 anti-rust products. Immerse your tools in a mixture of 2.5 liters of water infused with a 500 ml bottle of HG rust remover. Leave them for 10 minutes, then rinse them one by one with clear water. You can also apply the same product directly to larger tools that cannot be immersed in a basin.

Lime:

Another natural remedy for removing rust: lemon + salt. First, cover your tools with coarse salt. Then pour lemon juice over them. Leave for 2 to 3 hours, then rub with the citrus peel.

Baking Soda:

Prepare a thick paste of baking soda. Then apply it to your tools and leave it for a few minutes before scrubbing with a toothbrush. Finally, rinse your tools one by one with clean water.

Once your tools are clean and ready to use again, be sure to store them in a humid or poorly ventilated place. Humidity is indeed the main cause of rust.
